Choose realtime reporters by what they CAN do, not what they claim they can do. Insist on quality that starts at 99% and goes UP from there. Look past the marketing guys' promises and clarify exactly what you're getting for your money. And always, always be sure to get what you pay for!
All the marketing promises in the world don't mean a thing if reporters can't DELIVER!
You want a realtime reporter with a clue!
The reporter should have a solid working knowledge of realtime software and be able to answer any questions you may have about the program.
... who can troubleshoot!
Despite our best efforts, computers don't always talk to each other. The realtime reporter should know how to troubleshoot connection and display problems. Further, realtime over the internet requires extra computers, reliable internet access, and a much more experienced reporter.
...
... with their own equipment!
In my opinion, it's not unreasonable to expect the reporter to bring an extra laptop or two to every realtime job "just in case." I do and have for years. Reporters must offer both sides the same services, but offering the opportunity to use realtime without providing a laptop is like not offering it at all.
... and no excuses!
If you're not happy with the quality of realtime you receive, don't hesitate to call up the reporting firm and ask them to send a reporter who can deliver the quality of service you require.
